چکیده

Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) are similar in their ability to promote natriuresis and diuresis and act as vasodilators. These actions are counterbalanced by the vasoconstrictive and sodium-retaining actions of the renin-angiotensinaldosteron system. Both systems help to maintain sodium and fluid volume homeostasis in a healthy cardio-renal environment. C-type natriuretic peptide and urodilatin act predominately as vasodilators. Each NP has antimitogenic activity in both the cardiovascular system and other organ systems. This implies that the NPs may modulate growth within the vascular wall in disorders such as atherosclerosis, hypetension, and postangioplasty restenosis.

Measurement and significance of circulating natriuretic peptides in cardiovascular disease.

1. The major cardiovascular and renal actions of alpha-atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) and the fact that the heart is strategically located to sense changes in intravascular volume indicate the importance of these peptides in the overall control of the extracellular fluid volume under normal and pathophysiological conditions.2. This review examines the clini...

Science review: Natriuretic peptides in critical illness

The present review will cover the mechanisms of release and the potential pathophysiological role of different natriuretic peptides in critically ill patients. By focusing on the cardiovascular system, possible implications of natriuretic peptides for diagnosis and treatment will be presented. In critical illness such as sepsis, trauma or major surgery, systemic hypotension and an intrinsic myo...

Natriuretic peptides and cyclic guanosine 3',5'-monophosphate in asymptomatic and symptomatic left ventricular dysfunction.

BACKGROUND Screening for patients with asymptomatic left ventricular dysfunction is of considerable importance because they may benefit from early treatment with angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors. It has been suggested that atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), and cyclic guanosine 3',5'-monophosphate (cGMP) might be useful markers for screening. OBJECTIVE ...

The use of B-type natriuretic peptides in coronary artery disease: utile or futile?

-type natriuretic peptides (BNP and N-terminal [NT]roBNP) have been shown to be extremely helpful in the iagnosis, prognosis, and monitoring of therapy of patients ith heart failure (HF) (1). These neurohormones are preominately secreted from the left and the right cardiac ventricle n response to cardiac stress. The BNPs can be seen as uantitative markers of HF summarizing the extent of systoli...

Detection of left ventricular dysfunction after myocardial infarction: comparison of clinical, echocardiographic, and neurohormonal methods.

OBJECTIVE The SAVE study showed that captopril improves mortality in patients with left ventricular dysfunction after myocardial infarction and that this benefit occurred even in patients with no clinically overt heart failure. On the basis of this, it seems important to identify correctly which patients have left ventricular dysfunction after a myocardial infarction. The objective was to compa...

General practice Cohort study of plasma natriuretic peptides for identifying left ventricular systolic dysfunction in primary care

Objectives: To determine whether blood natriuretic peptide concentrations are helpful in identifying or excluding left ventricular systolic dysfunction in stable survivors of acute myocardial infarction. Design: Comparison of blood natriuretic peptide concentrations with echocardiographic assessment of left ventricular systolic function in a general practice population. Setting: Practices in We...
